Food manufacturers are scrambling to find more ways to attract the health concious consumer to buy their products. The interest in functional foods and nutraceutics by the public has prompted many companies to start adding vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other healthy ingredients to their traditional food product. A sceptical consumer can wonder why someone would buy a fruit juice with added calcium, when an extra glass of milk per day would be just as good a source of calcium. But there is a market for such kinds of foods.
The list of ingredients that are good for health grows every day, and so it will not be surprising to see food labels boldly proclaiming the addition of yet another nutrient. Some of these ingredients are not as familiar as others. Below is a list of some of the more hot ingredients that consumers can expect to see in products in the near future.
Known by various names vitamin Q10, co-enzyme Q10, ubiquinone or just Q10. It has a chemical structure similar to vitamin K. Beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease, athletic performance, hypertension and immune function have been reported for Q10.
